Entered thenavy in 1812. From 1836 to 1842 he was engaged in exploring the western coast of America. Sent out in 1852 as commander of the expedition in search of Sir John Franklin. Between that year and 1854 Melville Island was examined and all the land north and north-west of it, imcludimg style=border-color:#000000 hspace=8 vspace=12 Prince Patrick Island, on which cairns were found left by McClintock; also Wellington Channel.
