Educated by Strachan at Cornwall. He became Surveyor General in 1836 and between 1838 and 1842 held the post of inspector general. At Kingston he was a postmaster, a magistrate and from 1823 to 1836 agent for the Bank of Upper Canada. In 1837 and 1838 he sat as a government appointee on the Bank of Upper Canada's directorate. A director of the British North america Fire & Life Assurance Company, he was also for a time in the 1840s president of the Commercial Bank of the Midland District, Executive Councillor.
