Born at Alloa Scotland. From his father he inherited his Liberalism and hatred for slavery. Came to America with his father in 1838, and was associated with him in journalism in New York. In 1843 removed to Toronto where he established the Banner, afterw Tiré de Burpee, Lawrence J., Encyclopedia of Canadian History, Makers of Canada Series, vol 12, 1927.
